Noone ever likes to hear the word cancer.
But unlike some cancers, in most cases,
you can avoid skin cancer through prevention and a healthy diet. However, if
you suspect that you have this type of cancer, it’s best to know the warning
signs. But, when in doubt, seek the assistance of your physician. It’s always
better to be proactive (safe), than sorry.
It
is an abnormal growth of cells that not only invade healthy cells, but they
destroy them as well. There are two main types of skin cancers. The first type
is one that begins as a small growth that gradually increases in size and
damages surrounding tissue, but it doesn’t spread to other body parts. Other
types, however, are more aggressive, begin as lumps and spread to other parts
of the body.
Melanoma
The
most serious type of skin cancer is melanoma. Melanoma usually starts a mole or
birthmark that changes in size, shape, or color. Melanoma can spread quickly,
so if you notice any changes to areas of your skin, it’s a good idea to seek
advice from your physician. Do not panic, however, because most moles and
birthmarks are completely harmless. The good news: It can be cured if it is
identified and quickly treated!
Prevention
The
adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure certainly applies to the
prevention of this type of cancer. The best way to avoid skin cancer is to
avoid ultraviolet rays from sunlamps and sunlight. This applies to your
children as well. The American Cancer Society says that sunburns that occur
during child and teenage years greatly increase the risk of developing this
type of cancer later in life. In fact, 50% of the people who develop this
cancer get it between age 15 and 50.
Bottom
line, the risk of skin cancer increases with the number of years you have been
exposed to ultraviolet rays and the number of sunburns you’ve had. So, it’s
always best to use sunscreen when you head to the beach or pool, or when you
will be working outside.
